Quantity agreed at handover by the two people standing there, rather than entered twice afterwards from two sets of paperwork.

Sales reduce the balance
Reported by the store as they happen. The distributor is reading the same number, not waiting for a month-end statement.

Returns move it back
Recorded when the goods are collected, by both parties, which is the single largest source of month-end disagreement today.

The balance is simply current
There is no reconciliation, because there was never a second version to reconcile it against.
Shrinkage, damage and expiry are still real and still have to be settled. What ends is spending a week establishing what the numbers were.
